A nice guy, and a great listener. Once, when I was telling him about a notion that I had about renting a washer/dryer for my apartment, and saying that I thought that I'd never get approved, he listened, and nodded, and said, "Yes, but have you tried?"
It was sort of good all-around general advice that I have thought of several times over the years, as I faced one daunting prospect or another.
