Walk with John Blackburn, 2006

John Blackburn and I recently took our cameraas out for a no holds-barred grudge match during our walk.
This album contains an interesting-in-a-camera-nerdly-way test of the telephoto lens for portraits at various distances from the camera (from 5 paces to 40 paces).
If you're on a Macintosh, you can see John's photos here.

I took this picture of John in his house before the walk, and we discovered that he was frowning. Who knew?

I had my 70-300mm lens on the camera, and just couldn't fit the whole gate in.

Same shot from street level. I thought that I'd like this, but I think the other version is better.

At first I was a little surprised to see a dozen rules just for archery, but on the other hand, they're deadly weapons.

My camera and lens are both new, and I'm still learning. I forgot to bring the lens hood, and many of the pictures aimed in this direction had a fatal flare.

Before we got Scientific

One nice thing about a telephoto lens is that it sofens the background. But what distance would be ideal for portraits?

At this point, John suggested that we try various distances with the telephoto lens. "Science! Data!"

I'm fairly sure that's what these things are. They're pointy upstream, and then have a hole on the downstream side. I pretty much had to have the zoom lens to get this shot, which was taken from up on the bridge.
