America Just Loves Free-Thinkers!

In a recent University of Minnesota Study measuring attitudes about minority groups, Americans ranked atheists as the single least-trusted group of people in the country. In fact, atheists were listed below Muslims, recent immigrants, and homosexuals in terms of “Sharing America’s vision of society.”

Out of anyone their kids could end up with, parents said they disapproved the most if their children married an atheist, and half of the country won’t vote for a politician who doesn’t believe in God, even if that politician is well-qualified for office.

Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists?

(G. H. W.) Bush: I guess I’m pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me.

Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?

(G. H. W.) Bush: No, I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.

Sherman (taken aback): Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of State and Church?

(G. H. W.) Bush: Yes, I support the separation of Church and State. I’m just not very high on atheists.

The thing about Creationists (the hard right-wing Christians) is: they believe every word Genesis says.

I don’t even think Phil Collins is a good drummer.

The thing that I find so striking about the (G. H. W.) Bush quote, is that this is the Bush that’s supposed to be Not Insane.

Five days later, this quote is still annoying me:

    (G. H. W.) Bush: No, I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.

Bush must have thought that was mighty careless of the writers of the Constitution, leaving out God and all.
