So, How Did Tom Chappell and Ron Traver Do At Solvang 2002?

…By our lights, we Dominated!!

Underway by 6:27am, Ron arrived at the finish line at 3:15pm, and I arrived at 3:20pm. Note that if we’d gotten started at 6:00am sharp (and it’s my fault that we didn’t), we would both have been finished while the time was still “two-ish” — that is, while it was still before 3:00pm.

Although I was ahead of Ron the first two legs by four minutes of seat time, he quickly turned this around after we hit the hills out of Vandenberg.

I finished with a seat time (time spent pedaling) of 7 hours, 19 minutes, 50 seconds, which was a full 30 minutes faster than my previous record set in 1996.

Still, Ron beat this by a staggering 14 minutes! (But wait until next time!)

Both of us found the ride to be essentially a breeze. I only stopped once (apart from the SAG stops) for about a minute, right before the steep part near the end of Foxen Canyon road, to wash the salt off of my face with my water bottle.

For those of you familiar with the ride, here are readings from my altimeter (which keeps a per-minute log), in case you’ve ever wondered:

to have a hill called "The Wall.")

I’m looking forward to next time, and apart from that, I have to say,
“That wacky, wacky, Foxen Canyon Road.”
